Berkhamsted classes and sports for those who don't want to hit the gym

Last week Berkhamsted People featured some ideas for gyms and yoga classes for anyone who had decided this was the year they are going to get fit.
But if gyms aren't your thing, there are plenty of other ways you can get some exercise in and around Berkhamsted. Here are a few ideas...
Bytomic TDK has just introduced a series of new martial arts and self defence classes on Monday evenings at 7pm at Sportspace in Berkhamsted. And this is one for all the family - ages 6-50 all welcome, so you can go along with the kids! There are free trial classes for newcomers too. If you'd like to strengthen your back, improve your posture and condition and tone your whole body, Pilates may be the exercise for you. There are regular beginners' courses and Fran also offers one to one training.

You can get fit, have fun and make friends at the Fitness League classes, so they tell us! The classes have been running in Berkhamsted for 30 years and are run by Lisa Adams. She helps you to work on your strength, cardio, stretch and flexibility, so you should come out feeling refreshed and energised. The classes are held on Tuesdays at Swingate School. The guys at Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club seem a friendly bunch and they welcome players of all ages and ability. The club is based at Cow Roast, just outside Berkhamsted and has five men's teams and three women's teams
If you prefer racquets to sticks, then the http://www.bltsrc.co.uk">Berkhamsted Lawn Tennis & Squash Rackets Club might suit you better. There are six squash courts, and a club night is held every third Friday when you can come along to play and then enjoy a drink in the bar afterwards. The club also competes in leagues and there is coaching available too. If you want to get your tennis up to par before Wimbledon fortnight, the good news is that the club has two indoor and 10 outdoor courts, many of which are floodlit. You can play tennis between 7am and 11pm, whether you want to play socially or in a competitive league. Coaching is on offer too.
If you want to join in the new Zumba craze, but your fitness is not great, or you are a wheelchair user, you should head to Sportspace Berkhamsted on Tuesdays from the 2nd of February when a Zumba chair-based class will be running. This is suitable for all ages, male and female, who may be unable to take part in the standing exercise class. Call 01442 228123 for more.
Finally, if you enjoyed playing netball at school or college, there's no need to stop now! The Hares Netball Club meets on Mondays at Haresfoot School, Chesham Road,Berkhamsted, from 7.30-9pm. They are always looking for new players and often have a qualified coach at sessions, and they play friendlies against local teams. The Hares also compete in a league during the summer months.
