Reduced Street Lighting Proposals for Berkhamsted
By crozzie | Monday, January 09, 2012, 09:28
Herts CC has issued proposals for reducing night-time street lighting in Berkhamsted, which would apply from midnight to 6 a.m., starting in February. Across the county, 75% of street lights are being switched off between these times.
The High Street (and extensions at either end e.g. London Road) retains all lighting, all night.
Kings Road, Lower Kings Road, Bridgewater Road and some 'major side roads' e.g. Cross Oak Road have some lighting retained.
Other side roads will have all lighting switched off, apart from at junctions. Critical road signs and bollards would continue to be lit.
The proposals - in the form of a map with all street, and other, lights shown - can be seen at the Town Council offices, and the consultation ends on 20th January.
Comments
Apparently the timing of the switch off is not part of the consultation, as this has to be standard across the county, and midnight has been decided !! So a major element of the 'consultation' is not actually part of the consultation !

ReportGood points Mitch and Crozzie - make sure you get your thoughts to Berkhamsted's County Councillor - Friday January 20 (this Friday) is the cutoff point.

ReportI agree with you, mitch - midnight is too early to switch the lights off; there are still four trains depositing people at the station after that time, for example . I would say 1 a.m. would be preferable. A link to the map showing the proposals is now on the town council website: http://tinyurl.com/2cqtvvm (homepage).

ReportI think the idea in general is a good one but the timing is slightly amiss. I think the "switch off" should be between the hours of 2am to 6am. Although this reduces the energy saving time by two hours it allows residents walking home from pubs and bars etc to still feel safe during the walk. Generaly the longest you will have to walk from the central hub in berkhamsted high street to areas of residence is 45 minutes to an hour and with bars and pubs generally closing at a latest of 1 am this gives time for outgoers to walk home in lighted conditions. In my opinion this would be a good compromise which also allows 4 hours of energy saving whilst giving safe conditions for residents to walk home.

ReportYour comments are requested by Berkhamsted's County Councillor Ian Reay by Friday January 20 – email ian.reay@dacorum.gov.uk.
What do you think - will this affect you, or do you think it's a good way to cut energy consumption and save money?
