Another crafty parking 'solution'!

My avid reader will

recall my suggestion to resolve the towns parking problem after the

town council decided to spend a lot of time and effort trying to find

out what residents would like. Naturally, any decision was put off

until after the election and one can suppose that as the same

political grouping is still in place (names withheld to protect the

innocent) the same decision will be taken (don't expect a lot!). My

first suggestion was to just enforce the current law and plonk in

bays where the road will allow it. My second suggestion was have free

short term parking in the town centre and don't allow commuter

parking or all day parking within, say, the conservation area. Both

these fell on deaf ears, so how about this absolutely brilliant idea.

As motorists have

little regard for ordinary pedestrians, just do away with footways

(pavements) as cars have taken over most of them anyway. This simple

idea will allow more vehicles to be stationary (parked) in the town,

which is what most residents want, and no enforcement would be

required as it would be self policing.

Remember, these new

fangled kerbs and pavements only came in after the motor vehicle as

there was no need before, so as they already use the footway, why not

accept what residents want. If you don't believe me, just look out of

your window and I bet you can see a car parked on the pavement –

just ask yourself why!

You should get you all

complaining!

"I fail to see why a residents' parking scheme won't work in Berkhamsted, like they do everywhere else in the country." There is not the political will, I'm afraid. It has been put forward several times over the past 20 years and once residents realise that paying for a parking space that does not have their name on it, it suddenly does not get residents support. They haven't even got as far as also realising that more permits than spaces are also issued!! One thing that dawned on me this morning was the likes of Castle Street has double yellow lines down one side - meaning that moving vehicles travelling in opposite directions can pass (yes there are residents in the road before anyone mentions it), but the likes of Holliday Street, Chapel Street, Station Road, Charles Street,Shrublands,Boxwell etc. allow parking both sides. No logic or have , as usual, missed something? Berkhamsted School do not have a parking problem, it's nearby roads that do so don't expect any movement there. Carol Green is the BTC rep and I bet never has a word been uttered on the subject. Better get back to work now - if I can find a parking sport!

I fail to see why a residents' parking scheme won't work in Berkhamsted, like they do everywhere else in the country.. Those who are against this apparently argue that they won't be able to park both/ all three, four etc. of their precious boxes-on-wheels within ten yards of their front doors. The parking authority is going to have to tackle the elephant in the room - preferably sooner rather than later. BKM school also needs to get into negotiations with London Midland to agree rates for their pupils parking at the far end of the station CP, and let the dahlings walk to school from there, rather than clogging-up residential streets in term time.
