Notably the paragraph which reads:
"The proposals also include the closure of delivery offices in Berkhamsted and Kings Langley but mail bosses say customers will still be able to collect parcels without having to travel to Hemel Hempstead."
Has that changed then?
Given how often Royal Mail put 'We're sorry you were out' cards through my door when I'm actually at home and they just haven't bothered ringing the bell, I am not prepared to have to drive to Hemel to pick up parcels! So how do we persuade them otherwise? Who do we write to?

Amanda C: You can, as I have, talk to Carl Britton or Naz Ali, duty managers at the Berko office on 863213. The Berkhamsted Citizens Association is requesting the Gazette to run an article to make reseidents aware of the proposals and to lobby RM and our MP.
Ralphus: RM will argue this IS investment....
Ok, so we will have No Police Station, No Sorting or Collection Office from Royal Mail, No school places left because of the proposed housing build on Durrants Lane and Shootersway, No Doctors because all the good ones are full and you have to make an appointment to be ill, or they are so bad no one wants to go and see them, the infrastructure is bursting at the seams, but hey, WE WiLL have Estate Agents, Restaurants, Bars, Charity Shops and Congestion on the roads, No Parking as the car parks will be bursting assuming you can get through the traffic to get to them in the first place!! AND this is progress ??

"And. of course, only one public toilet, a good half an hour walk from the edge of town !"
The secret is either not to go the edge of town or buy a drink at one of the numerous bars or restaurants to ensure you need to use the facilities (preferable to the Water Lane ones often).
I'm beginning to think the idea is to actually make the place far less attractive to live in so the ancient infrastructure will last a few more years. I've just returned from a little place called Bakewell and they haven't ripped the heart out of the town centre, they do have a cottage hospital as well as good facilities (as one resident said "did you bring your bike?, they've just refurbished a disused railway tunnel and it has lights in it") Honest, I didn't make it up, but shows the pride residents have in the town. The A6 passes straight through, but they don't have a railway! Now there's an idea!!
My first thoughts are great, this is an opportunity to get rid of two eye-sores at once...the police station and the sorting office. Let's just hope that whatever takes there place is more in keeping with the historical character of much of the town.

Our postie this morning said that they have been told it could be closing towards the end of August - having already moved from May, through July and early August!
They are still not certain if there will be a 'pick-up' office in Berkhamsted although the room above the current Post Office is being considered but it is far from certain.
We would get our post later in the day than we do already as on top of the move to Hemel there are also plans for the staff to start the sorting process later in the day - from the current start times of 6 - 6.30 am to 8 am.
If we're lucky we'll get our post in time to catch any'urgent' matters before offices start closing from 5pm onwards!!
Modern progress, you can't beat it!
Berkhamsted Citizens Association is still fighting to retain a mail collection facility in Berko, but Royal Mail seem determined to make us either go to Maylands to pick up undelivered mail, or wait in for redelivery. There's still time to lobby Royal Mail and/or your MP to retain a service, but the delivery office closes in three weeks (20 August)
You'll all be pleased to know that Royal mail will drag itself into the21st century on 22nd August 2001 - opening hours will be 7am to 7pm Mon to Fri and 7am to 2pm on Saturday.
All you have to do is get to Maylands Ave when that nice postman of yours tiptoes up to your front door. puts a card through to say you were not in and dashes off.
