As the day approaches when good old analogue broadcasts will be turned off is getting closer. For this discussion, I'm going to ignore DAB radio as that really is a disaster.
I'm talking about the 'freeview' service we are being pushed into.
Yesterday I was subjected to live pictures from sports events that pixilated whenever the action got too much for the system. Interviews were ruined by the background noise rising whenever anyone was silly enough to take a breath which made listening or watching really hard work.
I tried the radio, that works until something difficult has to be processed when distortion takes over. I know that on even 'normal' broadcasts a degree of compression is used (TV adverts are currently being investigated by OFCOM because of viewer complains), but this digital stuff is taking the biscuit.
Digital as it currently operates really isn't 'high quality' or like how much can be pushed into a small space so that money can be made. I mean, do you watch the 'sales' programs? Do you not have a recorder so that you can watch something later? Do we need a separate 'channel' to repeat a program one hour later?
If you look at the TV listings, you will notice that it says the majority of programs are repeats unless otherwise stated.
Have I really lost the plot??
I won't mention the idea that TV watchers can't watch Andy Murrey on BBC2 from Australia and must only watch on BBC1. There can't be many who do not have the 4 main channels at the turn of a dial or even a push of a button from the comfort of the armchair.
PS, I'm currently watching a silent live program - through the window, of white stuff falling from above. Very realistic it is too!
Just a warning on this one. I was foolish enough to do a retune as the TV came up with 'channels have changed, please retune'. So like a good boy I did. Setting the recording this morning (why do you have to do that?) It now seems we have Cambs and Beds TV and they have different programs!
