You have to remember that the town centre was designed by 'students' as a project (6 towns 'suffered'). They introduced some interesting ideas and I can remember suggesting several 'improvements', but was told it was too late. They even had a mobile exhibition where you could ask questions and make suggestions, only they really had no idea. Apparently the 'pinch point' were actually 'pedestrian facilities', they managed to put a bus stop on a blind corner next to one of these features and there are several places where the lie of the land makes for blind spots. It's obvious that the whole thing was designed from flat maps, they didn't ride motor bikes (I believe you will find cycle attachment fittings in the town centre and that is were motor cycles were supposed to go - don't laugh, it's not really runny!), and motor vehicles were/are considered as traffic calming measures. Welcome to our little market town and if you want a bit more recent history, have a look at http://tinyurl.com/6emukv6
Thank you for the answer. I like this Town but for example suggestion that I got that I can park on any side road if there is no yellow line is bit tricky ad the town high street is in the valley and side roads are not flat and I wish you luck to park a motorbike on the stiff hills. It is not a car it will overturn. I believe they should create some motorbike bays next to costa café as the pavement is very wide there.
As I said, not a lot of thought went into the 'project', I don't think there is much chance of have a 'motorcycle only' facility judging by the way the taxi rank is treated (yes, there is one, sorry there are actually two and your task is to find them if interested - I will give the answer tomorrow!). One of the other quirks is that a lot of the pavements along the High Street are privately owned and thus outside the scope of County to provide facilities. We do like a challenge in this town!!
The taxi rank(s) could be done away with - all taxis congregate at the station these days, to the exclusion of anyone else ! Turn the taxi ranks ( I can think only of the one in Water Lane) in motorcycle parking. Could be implemented by around 2017 after umpteen rounds of consultation and at a cost of £many.00.
NC- Who does own the High Street pavements if "privately owned" ? Why would any sane person buy a parking ticket before they find a space ??! Surely you have to have stopped/ parked before you can use the ticket machine....??
You silly boy! Each shop front often owns part of the footway (look for the brass marker studs). The Town Hall trust owns/manages most of the area between the studs and the High Street between Lower Kings Road and Water Lane. The parking conditions state that you must buy a ticket prior to parking in a marked bay - honest!!- I did bring up this little difficulty when it was introduced, but I was told 'they are standard conditions'. Bit like the London Boroughs that had to remove marked parking bays due to they small size and vehicles could not pass each other with the correct sized ones (I wonder if the Town/Borough Council will understand this little difficulty as I have told them, but again was just fobbed off with it wasn't up to them but County). Pass the buck rules OK. Just to put you all out of your misery, look at the sign outside the Natwest Bank to see information on the 2nd taxi rank.
Hi you are right that is not the problem. The problem is that if you are biker you need to take this ticket with you as there is no secure way to display it. You will receive fine from warden and you have to appeal. So I could have 5 fines a week for 50 weeks so it is 250 fines a year, 250 appeals and that all just because I am buying a ticket. How many if this fines would be cancelled, waived?
The second taxi rank is at the bottom of Elm Grove before you get to the bus stop. It's only a rank between something like midnight and 6am. The logic is that taxis must not get in the way of buses and people are chucked out of meetings/bars/restaurants about midnight. This is naturally the same logic that allows restaurant and cinema to be refurbished and the existing car park to have flats built on it. When questioned on the logic apparently people walk the the cinema, or they catch a bus (stop laughing at the back!!). When suggested that this scenario was not really likely, the answer came back that there was plenty of car parking in the Town Centre car parks. Honest, I didn't make it up. (and it never rains in Berkhamsted either)
Have you seen the new Parking Proposals to reduce the parking problems of residents caused by nasty commuters and workers parking all day.
I think this is a wonderful idea, and I'm sure most reasonable people do too. All you need is to put a parking ban in for a couple of hours in the affected streets........ just like the schems already in place in Castle Hill and Castle Hill Avenue where the yellow line is to ban parking between 11am and 12, result, no all day p[arking.
Ah, but unfortunately the bureaucrats have devised a complete c**k up of a scheme - http://tinyurl.com/628fer9 - which puts parking bans in place from 8am until 8pm and 8am until 6pm.
So no more parking in the side streets at 6.30pm to go and visit the Rex, and of course let's make it totally impossible for any parents to park for 15 minutes in the afternoon and pick up their children from Berkhamsted School !!!!
And then to cap it they will be charging all the residents for a permit to park in their own street during the 'curfew' times.
Well done, well done. I bet there will be special bays just for Bentleys and Range Rovers to allow real Berkhamsted people to park, as you know white vans and regular cars are not presenting very well on Berko high street. Called JVS Show and they are very interested in our local parking scheme for motorbikes.
