Just arrived through my letterbox is a leaflet from the newly formed organisation named Save Your Berkhamsted.
Apparently we are going to have thousands of more homes, resulting in more residents, with more crs, leading to more traffic, leading to more children (let's not worry where they are going to be born at the moment, with loss of green belt and arable land.
This group resulted over concerns about the expansion of the private school at the top of Durrants Lane.
They have ignored the efforts that the County Council, the Borough Council, the Town Council and the likes of the Citizens Association in warding off the governments plans (aka East Of England Regional Assembly) to meet the apparent need for more homes.
It is well known there is at least a million empty properties at any one time in the south east of the country, there are also empty housing estates 'up north' as well as numerous MOD properties standing idle all over the south of England.
They are looking for residents to sign a petition to convince the 'Planners that Berkhamsted (aka residents around Shootersway) does not want these homes. They do not even appear to know the efforts that our local Councillors and planning officers are making to reduce any impact that additional housing may make.
A touch of NIMBY seems to be the order of the day.
If you really want to make your views known, contact your local Councillor whose e-mail can be found on the Borough web site, or join the Citizens Association who are actively working on the towns behalf behind the scenes.
Your Local MP is already aware of our views and perhaps with an election coming soon, you might like to contact the various political parties and get their views.
I don't know about you, but most current residents actually live in property that didn't just 'appear'.
I started in one of the pre-fabs at the top of Three Close Lane (built on agricultural land at the end of the war by BUDC).
I moved into one of the new homes built on Durrants Farm (built on a farm).
I now live on the Swing Gate Estate (built on the grounds of Highfield House).
