I'll be visiting Berkhamsted to meet-up with an old friend and am wondering what's a nice pub, serving decent beer, not too loud....the kind of place that a couple of 40-something 'grumpy old men'-type blokes can have a few drinks and a good natter.

Any ideas ?  In the past I've found the Boat and Rising sun to be OK......

    Thanks in advance....

The Riser has changed hands and is an even better spot for grumpy old men to have a pint and a natter.

I used to like the Crooked Billet, but it's a shop now.
And the Old Grey Mare, but it's flats now.
And even the Brownlow arms, but that's an office.
All the stories in the news about pubs shutting are nothing new!

So true Russell, a lot of good drinking spots have vanished! I'm a fan of The Boat though. Where did you go in the end Andrew?

We went to the Boat in the end.  We sat outside and it was OK.  The inside was full of braying twenty- and thirty-somethings so I'm still on the lookout for somewhere else.

Maybe I'll try the Bull.....anyone been there lately ?

You should get down the Lamb. Decent beer, decent landlord, one of the few proper pubs in Berko!

Thanks, upingreenway, maybe I will.  Does the Lamb have an outside area for my smoking friend ?

Hi Andrew, the Lamb has a little courtyard out the back, as a decent smoking area, complete with a small water feature! Occasionally in very good weather a small bar opens up in the courtyard as well! Smokers also frequent the tables out on the High Street.
