Five ways to spend a summer's day in Berkhamsted

As Berkhamsted's summer rumbles on under typically British weather, here are five of the best ways to while away a summer's day in and around the town - come rain or shine.

Take a tour of Berkhamsted Castle
Berkhamsted Castle
Take a trip through time at one of the oldest motte-and-bailey castles in Britain, dating back to 1066. Between 10am and 6pm during the summer, you can wander through the English Heritage grounds, explore the ruins or enjoy a picnic from scenic vantage points high above the moat. Read up on the history before you go, or join a guided tour next month during the Berkhamsted Heritage Open Day.
Grand Union Canal
For a fresh perspective on the canal, hire a boat and make your way through the town by water. There are plenty of canalside pubs to stop at for refreshment, including The Rising Sun, The Boat, The Old Mill and The Three Horseshoes.
Ashridge Estate
It's one of the country's most popular walking spots - and it's right on our doorstep. The Ashridge Estate spans a swathe of woods on chalk downlands at the north end of the Chiltern Hills, with stunning views over Berkhamsted. Try the two-mile wildlife walk or follow the National Trust cycle routes, or go along for the children's night-time wildlife walk or the Chilterns Countryside Festival.
Sunnyside Allotments
The lush green allotment ground, in Ivy House Lane, has a public footpath running through it and is a scenic addition to any summer's day walk - but visit on Sunday (August 15) for the chance to sample the locally-grown produce for yourself. If it inspires you to pep up your own garden, check out the summer stock at Woods Garden Centre - or register your interest in an allotment by calling Berkhamsted Town Council on 01442 228945.
Rex Cinema
The art deco cinema's summer programme includes matinee and evening screenings - perfect for when the weather's less than glorious outside. If the sun does come out, enjoy a cocktail or a cold pint afterwards on The Gatsby's enormous outdoor terrace.

Was driving through Ashridge yesterday (after being stuck on the M25 for hours) was struck by just how beautiful it is. We are so lucky to live near such a brilliant place.
