One hundred posts at Hertfordshire Police will be axed this year - but we will all pay more for policing.

The cuts follow a shortfall in government funding of more than £4m.

Announcing that a reduction in the workforce would be accompanied by a 3.5 per cent rise in the police element of council tax, Hertfordshire Police Authority chairman Stuart Nagler said the organisation was facing "unprecedented financial pressures".

The force will also merge some of its operations with Bedfordshire Police, including its major crime, dog and firearms units, in a move expected to save £2.5m.

Mr Nagler said: "Even with a increase [in council tax] and the use of £630,000 from reserves, we will still have to make cuts."

An authority spokesman added that the constabulary will work with staff and union representatives to keep redundancies to a minimum.

The total number of police across the county will remain above 2,000.

    It's all right.
The Gazette reports that they are asking for volunteers to do the paperwork.

It must be a wind up. Fancy the Gazette falling for that old trick.

Just like the County Council spending £140 million to replace working lamposts instead of filling a few holes in the road.

    Perhaps it is true?
