Berkhamsted High Street: "tired" and "untidy"?

Berkhamsted High Street has been thrown under the shopping spotlight by Marketplace News as part of an investigation into the Great British High Street.

However, our "thriving high street" comes under fire for "a rather untidy WH Smith which appears to be force-feeding chocolate" and "a particularly tired-looking branch of Clinton Cards".

Local retailers are also criticised for their "infuriating" habit of closing their doors at 5pm and refusing to open on Sundays.

The first part of the article focuses on Laura Ashley Home, and the second part explores independent gift shop Number Twenty.

Do you agree with the write-up? Does Berkhamsted High Street need a makeover?

They desperately need to redevelop (ie pull down and rebuild) the row of shops with WH Smith, Laura Ashley, Carphone Warehouse etc - it's a hideous parade well out of keeping with the beautiful architecture on the maj. of the restl

I am relatively new to Berkhamsted so not sure if well placed to comment but have to say that I have noticed that over the past 12 months the high street is getting untidy especially on a sunday morning

I've lived in Berkhamsted for 20 years and I agree, the highstreet is looking tired. I love the shops there and I don't mind that they are no open on Sundays but I do think opening later would benefit the community. I understand that this would be difficult for shop owners however perhaps a 'late night', for example Thursdays open until 8pm would be suitable. Some of the shops definitely need a revamp though!

anyone venturing onto the high street on a sunday morning will see eaxctly how tired and untidy it looks, litter strewn everywhere and broken bottles and glasses from the previous nights antics!

Living on the high street I know that most days it is very clean and well kept but Sundays reallly are rotten!

Had to laiugh at the force feeding choc comments, I thought it was just me but yes you can't go in there without having to resist the large bar of dairy milk they try to shove down your throat!
