Berkhamsted man killed at station

A man died after being hit by a train at Berkhamsted station on Saturday afternoon. 

The man threw himself off platform two at around 2.30pm, in front of a Virgin train travelling from Manchester to London Euston.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man has not yet been formally identified, but is believed to be a 61-year-old from the town.

Steve Betts, control room inspector at British Transport Police, said: "We were advised at 2.32pm that a man had been hit by a train within the confines of Berkhamsted railway station.

"The officers from the transport police entered and discovered the remains of a deceased person who had been struck by a train and killed."

Berkhamsted station was closed following the incident, and trains on the line were subject to cancellation and severe delays into Saturday evening. 

Nine squad cars and an ambulance attended the scene

The death is not being treated as suspicious.
