Celebrate spring with a spring in your step this May Day, with our run-down of the best Bank Holiday events in Berkhamsted and beyond.
-
Celebrate May Day in Berkhamsted with some traditional and not-so-traditional days (and nights) out
- It may be a bit optimistic given the weather forecast, but welcome the summer sun on Saturday by watching the St Albans Morris Men perform their 6am sunrise dance at the Alban Arena. To gain an extra quarter of an hour in bed, watch the Aldbury Morris Men at 6.15am at the village pond.
- Don your own dancing shoes for a night of lessons, performances and partying at Saturday's Salsatheque May Day special. The evening begins in Berkhamsted Town Hall at 7.45pm with salsa classes for every level of ability. By the time the doors shut at 1.30am, there will also have been advanced Bachata classes, a Bachata performance and the chance to let your hair down to the sound of DJ Ben.
- For fun in the fresh air, visit Aldbury on Monday. The Aldbury May Day Fair is open from midday to 5pm and there will be a record number of stalls and activities on offer, including Morris dancing, maypole dancing, live music, barbecue, hog roast, steam engine, fancy dress, archery, laser arena, climbing wall, trampolines and lots more. Entry is free.
- Sip the first of the summer wine at Frithsden Vineyard, which is opening its much-anticipated winery shop for one day only on Saturday. Read more at Boho Boxmoor.
- Tickle your funny bones at The Rex Cinema on Saturday night with an evening of comedy and magic, all in aid of charity. For a more dramatic escape from the real world, watch Tim Burton's phantasmagoric interpretation of Alice in Wonderland on both Sunday and Monday.
- Frolic in a quarter-acre flowering garden on Sunday and raise money for charity. Known as Patchwork, the garden, at 22 Hall Park Gate, will be open from 2pm to 5pm as part of the National Gardens Scheme - and includes a shelter if the rain comes to visit with you. The garden includes blooming tulips, late narcissus, early clematis, azaleas and heathers, and money from the £3 entrance fee and refreshments sales will go to charity.
- Celebrate the lengthening days at the Tring Spring Fayre, which begins on Saturday and runs until May 15. Its programme includes a farmers' market, local Tring ale stalls, guided walks, tai chi and self defence classes, litter picking and a treasure hunt.
- Get green-fingered at the Herts Garden Show, which takes place from Saturday to Monday at Knebworth House and promises around 80 exhibitors, including Chelsea medal winners. Other attractions include demonstrations, a craft area, brass band and children’s rides.
