A double decker car park will be built at Berkhamsted station, London Midland has announced.

The rail company plans to increase the capacity of the station's car park, which backs onto Bridgewater Road, by constructing an upper tier.

The car park expansion was originally proposed in March last year, but was postponed indefinitely in June after residents sent station bosses a petition voicing their fears that the new car park would compromise their privacy and cause noise and light pollution.

However, London Midland, which does not require planning permission for the project, has now decided to go ahead.

The development will provide a further 98 spaces, on top of the 390 already available. A date has not yet been set for the construction work.

London Midland spokesman Andrew Bennette said: "There will be local consultation before the work starts, and we believe there is support for the plans locally."

The expansion is part of a £5 million plan to improve station parking and increase the available spaces across the rail network, which was set out in a central government deal when London Midland took on the franchise.

In September, the cost of a day's parking at Berkhamsted station rose to £5.80, or £29 per week for the average commuter.

    Strange old world, isn't it?
Wimbledon starts today and there are loads of parking on the streets and the traffic is about a quarter of the usual (go on, get out and have a look!).
I can only suppose , (a) the car parks have suddenly got popular, (b) the 'car free day' is a day early or (c) the 'school' and most parents suddenly have a passion for tennis - due to the apparent failure of the event in South Africa.

I cannot understand why it costs so much to park at Berko station - someone is profiteering! We went up to London from Rickmansworth station at the weekend and it cost £1 to park all day. During the week it costs £2.70 per day from 0530 in the morning until 0130 at night - and this reduces to £2.50 per day if you buy a whole week at a time. It is a brand new car park just adjacent to the railway line. If they can do that in Rickmansworth why not in Berko?

If we don’t say no in HUGE numbers they are going to put it up in July. If you don’t want it to happen, please help stop it by emailing the address here

    yourview-carparks@londonmidland.com

and telling them why you don’t want it. Please remember they don’t have to go through planning permission or formal consultation so this is the last chance you have to impress on them that this is not a popular move and get them to stop it.
