If you venture into Hemel Hempstead town centre this weekend, you could be forgiven for thinking Christmas has come early.

But the hundreds of Santas turning the town red are doing it all for charity.

Men, women, children and animals dressed in Santa suits will take to the streets on Sunday (December 6) to raise money for Berkhamsted's Hospice of St Francis

The starting sleigh bell will ring on the Santa Dash at 10am.

Fran Martin, chief elf and event organiser, said: "At only two and a half miles the route is suitable for everyone - whether you are a Santa who sprints, or a Santa who saunters! Push for a seasonal best or take as long as you like, the choice is yours. As long as you have fun and raise money, we don't mind how long it takes!"

Anyone of any age (or species) can take part in the Santa Dash 2009, and last year's entrants ranged in age from eight weeks to 80 years.

Entry is £15 for adults, £5 for children or £35 for the whole family.

The entry fee includes a medal, Santa suit and breakfast from Oojam.

The route takes in the Riverside Shopping Centre, the Old Town, Gadebridge Park and the Water Gardens

Ralph Harvey, official Santa for Santa Dash 2009, said: "Being a part of the Santa Dash is very important to me as my wife died at the old Hospice many years ago. Even without having to go to where the patients are you get a sense of love and care."

If you bump into this many Father Christmases does that mean you get hundreds of presents?

This was a pretty weird sight to see round these parts, I tell thee. but, fun nonetheless. The kids loved it and the wife was overly happy to see lots of fat, red men dressed up. Great day all round, I guess.
