Engineers are working through the night to repair overhead power lines brought down by a train in Berkhamsted today.

The damage to the cables took place just before lunchtime, and caused the suspension of all train services for several hours this afternoon.

Two of the four tracks are now back in use, but trains are still subject to cancellation and severe delays, and the problems are affecting services as far afield as Manchester.

Network Rail said engineers would be working overnight to repair the cables and hoped to resume a normal service on Tuesday morning.

The on-site team is investigating why the power lines came down and are looking at possible faults on the train engine and the line.

They are also looking to see if the cold weather had an effect.
